Cantata Singers 2011 Season Quick-Look

The board is working hard to put the finishing details together for the 2010-2011 season. Rehearsals will begin the Sunday following Labor day at 6 pm. We will begin working on the Vivaldi 'Gloria' for our first concert of the season in December.

January and February will be spent preparing for a concert anchored by Carol Barnett's amazing "The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass". The encore of this wonderful work is not to be missed!

March and April's rehearsals will focus on music of Brahms, Bach, Beethoven and the gorgeous "Agnus Dei" that is the choral version of Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings".

Watch this space for additional details about the upcoming 2010-2011 season!

The Cantata Singers, based in Elmira, NY, were founded in 1964 as a community-based choral organization dedicated to providing local residents the opportunity to perform in, and listen to, great classical choral works. Since the beginning, we have performed over 150 free concerts throughout the Southern-Tier region. Our season typically consists of three performances, an Advent-Christmas concert, the opening concert of the popular 'Festival of Women in the Arts' and a May concert that's likely to include just about anything from Bach to the works of contemporary composers.

The 2010-2011 season will include Vivaldi's 'Gloria' and some traditional advent and Christmas music; the 'Festival of Women in the Arts' will be back. After 2010's record-breaking year (42 events) we're anticipating an even bigger and better series of events. The season will close with a program that features the music of the "three B's plus one". Bach, Brahms, Beethoven and Barber will be featured. See the 'Events Page' for more specific information.

The Cantata Singers are made up of dues-paying volunteer singers who are led and accompanied by music professionals. Many performances also feature paid vocal soloists and orchestral musicians. The organization sponsors an annual “Young Performers Competition” to recognize and foster musical arts for area youth. The award is a cash prize and the opportunity to perform at our winter concert. More information can be found on the 'Events Page'.

The Cantata Singers had the special pleasure this spring of singing at the ARTS of the Southern Finger Lakes Annual Meeting. With some excellent help from flutist Alexis Del Palazzo we performed two of the pieces that were being prepared for the May 16 program at the First Congregational Church in Corning. The music was beautiful, the group was well received and everyone had a fabulous time!

The event was held on the third floor of the Rockwell Museum in Corning, NY, affording us the opportunity to sing amidst the amazing western art housed in the gallery. You can see a portion of the large work behind the singers.
